5A District 3 recap October 8, 2013
Las Cruces added to the longest winning streak in 5A District 3 this week by beating Artesia, 54-0. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
Onate and West Mesa played the most contested game in the league this week, with Onate eventually emerging with a 27-24 victory.
Gadsden's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Steven Herrera threw for 120 yards and Arturo Sotelo had 31 yards receiving. On the ground Ramon Martinez chipped in 205 yards. Daniel Contreras helped Gadsden's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 34 yards.
Martinez provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Panthers fell to Roswell. Martinez's favorite target this week was Sotelo, who caught 5 passes for 31 yards.
Martinez was the best running back in the league this week. In 31 carries, he ran for 205 yards as Gadsden lost to the Coyotes. Teammate Kevin Loera added to the ground attack by rushing for 17 yards.
Gadsden's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Panthers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Herrera has thrown for 532 yards and 5 touchdowns this season, while Martinez has 13 catches for 178 yards.
The Knights are currently in third, while Las Cruces is in first.
Jim Miller's team took down the Bulldogs 54-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
