MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Brentwood Academy (Tenn.) Eagles have officially been named to the 13th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its thirteenth year honoring football.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for 100 of the top teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For football, only 50 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 17,000 competing varsity teams, this puts the Eagles ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
In order to be eligible, the team not only had to be nationally ranked, but also had to win a state championship. Beating Montgomery Bell Academy 28-14 on Saturday, Dec. 2 in the
TSSAA Division II Class 3A state championship contest marked the completion of an incredible 12-0 season — and earned Brentwood Academy an invitation to the Tour of Champions.
Gavin Schoenwald hooked up with Camron Johnson on first half scoring grabs of 16 and 19 yards and the Eagles never looked back after bolting out to a 28-7 halftime advantage. Montgomery Bell Academy did pull within 28-14 with 5:32 left in the third quarter, but failed to get any closer. Twice the Big Red drove deep into Eagle territory late in the game, but those possessions ended on an incomplete pass on fourth down and Kenyon Garlington's fourth down pass breakup.
Johnson also scored on a 47-yard run in the first quarter that opened the game's scoring and Tomario Pleasant hit pay dirt from three yards as the Eagles upended the Big Red in the championship game for the third straight year.
Schoenwald completed eight of 13 passes for 98 yards and rushed for 57 yards on five carries, while Johnson finished with five catches for 76 yards. Devyn Curtis led a defense that held the Big Red to 259 yards of total offense with 16 tackles. Jackson Sirmon and Luke Knox had 11 and six tackles respectively.
Brentwood Academy opened playoff competition with a first round bye. Then, following a 43-7 win over Memphis University, the Eagles bumped McCallie from championship contention with a 28-6 semifinal triumph to set up the championship bout with the Big Red. Cody White's club upended Hillsboro 53-14 in the season opener. Then, 11 wins later, Brentwood Academy claimed an unbeaten season and the school's 13th state football title, third best in all of Tennessee. The Eagles outscored their competition 442-120 and posted a pair of shutouts. Brentwood Academy held 11 opponents to 14 points or less.
Having won 17 straight contests dating back to 2016, Brentwood Academy set itself up for some rather high rankings come season's end. Not only are the Eagles the top team in MaxPreps'
Tennessee Division II Class 3A rankings, Brentwood Academy is the best team in all of
Tennessee. The Eagles are ranked No. 44 in
MaxPreps' National Rankings!
These incredible season achievements have earned the Brentwood Academy Eagles an invitation to the 13th Annual Tour of Champions.
