Today is Tuesday May 3rd and it is cold and rainy outside. All of us in the northeast are ready for summer! We received a taste of that warmth today at Hillhouse (New Haven, Conn.)
High School in New Haven, CT. The 5th Annual MaxPreps Basketball Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard was on hand to award the Hillhouse Academics girls' basketball team with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy. The team finished #38 nationally in the MaxPreps Freeman poll out of over 20,000 high school girls' varsity basketball teams!
From the moment I met the dynamic school principal, Kermit Carolina, I knew we were in for a special day and the school did not disappoint. The trophy celebration started promptly at 12:30pm in the gymnasium with over 300 student athletes and representatives from the school's ROTC program. The school has over 130 students in the ROTC program.
Hillhouse's great band and cheerleaders started off the event in spectacular fashion. Mr. Carolina spoke of the great tradition of girls' basketball at the school and of the third straight state championship and ninth overall. He should know, as he was the coach for four of them before turning over the reins to Head Coach Catrina Hawley-Stewart.
Rod Mergardt of MaxPreps was truly touched by the outpouring of support as he took the microphone. He was impressed by the respect and pride that every single student has in their school. He wasted no time in bringing up Major Charles Jaworski of the Connecticut Army National Guard to award the team. Major Jaworski echoed the sentiments of the day about the incredible on-court achievements of the team and compared it to the teamwork and dedication of the proud members of the Army National Guard. Coach Catrina and the team then came up to accept the coveted and well-deserved trophy in front of students, faculty and local media. The band capped the event with another song and Mr. Carolina challenged the team and coach to get another championship in 2012.
I have no doubt they can do it. Thank you Hillhouse for a great day!
