Baseball: Polizzano Perfect
No-hitters, and even perfect games, aren't as rare as you might think at the high school level. Dozens of no-no's are tossed around the country each week. But not many are carried out with the kind of efficiency that Southridge High School (Fla.) senior Corey Polizzano displayed last Wednesday.
The left-hander needed just 62 pitches for a perfect outing against Varela in an 8-0 win. On the season, Polizzano has a 6-1 record, sporting a 0.40 ERA with 81 strikeouts for the Miami high school.
Polizzano will attend Florida International University next year.
Soccer: Washington, California Standouts Finding the Net
Jefferson High School (Wash.) sophomore Tyler Hanson and Dixon High School (Calif.) senior Dani Hunt have been piling up goals in bunches as of late.
Hanson had a memorable performance Monday, piling up five second-half goals in a 6-0 win over Spanaway Lake. The sophomore forward has seven goals and an assist in seven matches for the Raiders this season. Jefferson is Washington's defending 4A state champion.
In California, Hunt leads the Sac-Joaquin Section with 23 goals, including 18 in her last nine outings. Hunt had multiple-goal efforts against Buckingham Charter (4), Bradshaw Christian (3), Foothill (3), Highlands (3), and Rio Linda (3), leading the Rams to a 6-0-1 mark during that span.
Hunt's ability to score goals is not the only thing that sets her apart from other players. The senior foward could be the only soccer player in the country that fashions a triple-digit uniform number. The senior forward/midfielder wears No. 100.
Basketball: Oden Earns Gatorade Award, Visit From "Dicky V"
Lawrence North High School (Ind.) senior Greg Oden earned Gatorade's National Player of the Year honors Monday, joining LeBron James as the only two-time recipient of that honor.
The award was presented to Oden by ESPN basketball personality Dick Vitale and aired on the cable network's most-visible program, SportsCenter.
The Ohio State-bound center engineered a clean sweep of the various national player of the year awards, including the Naismith Award, the Morgan Wootten Award, Parade Magazine Player of the Year, as well as Monday's recognition from Gatorade. Oden was also named National Player of the Year by MaxPreps.
