Video: Final Xcellent 25 High School Football RankingsMater Dei ends the season as mythical national champions.
See the video above for a complete breakdown of this week's Xcellent 25 high school football rankings presented by the Army National Guard.
Here's a look at the developments that shaped the final Top 25:
• Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)
started the year at No. 1 and ends the season at that same spot. The Monarchs had one of the toughest schedules in the country and they never trailed at any point in 2017. They capped off their perfect season winning the school's first section title since 1999 and beat De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)
in the CIF Open Division championship game to claim its first state title. The 2017 Mater Dei team will go down as one of the best in recent history.
There were two big movers in the final release of our Top 25.
• St. Frances Academy (Baltimore)
and Chandler (Ariz.)
both had impressive showings at the GEICO State Champions Bowl Series.
The Baltimore power moved into the Top 5 after handing Bingham (South Jordan, Utah)
its first loss of the season in dominant fashion with a 41-3 win. The Panthers finished the year 14-0 and only allowed 61 points total. They only allowed one opponent to score 10 points or more this season and posted six shutouts in 2017.
Chandler scored 50 points or more for the eighth time this season after beating Northwestern (Miami)
55-20 in the night cap of the doubleheader. Jacob Conover
finished his junior season throwing for nearly 400 yards and five scores as the Wolves won their 11th consecutive game. Watch the video above to see how far Chandler moved up in this week's Top 25.
• Allen (Texas)
moved up to No. 3 after winning one of the toughest postseason brackets in the nation — the UIL Texas 6A Division 1 state title.
The Eagles beat the defending state champs Lake Travis (Austin, Texas)
35-33 to win their fifth state title in school history and first since 2014. Turnovers and a great performance from Brock Sturges
were too much for Lake Travis to handle. The future Arizona State pledge rushed for 177 yards and three scores.
• Rome (Ga.)
is the only new team to join the final Top 25 rankings. The Georgia Class 5A state champs went a perfect 15-0 this year and won its second consecutive state title. They were one of the most dominant teams in recent Georgia history. They won their five playoff games by an average margin of 46.2 points per game. That is the largest margin of victory during five rounds in state history.
