Greg Harshman made the most of his first-ever touchdown.
Harshman, who plays at Heritage, returned a fumble 50 yards for a score as the East beat the West 17-0 in the Freedom Bowl Classic at Columbia River High School in Vancouver.
The Freedom Bowl is an all-star game for southwest Washington.
Harshman's score earned him defensive player of the game.
“It just fell into my lap, and I started running for my life,” Harshman told the Columbian newspaper. “I thought they were a lot closer than they were. That’s why I dived in. It looked good, though.”
The game was dominated by the defenses. It was 3-0 until the fourth quarter.
Mountain View's Domenique Hill scored the game's only offensive touchdown on a 10-yard run. His high school teammate Cailen Thomason set up the run with a 42-yard reception.
Thomason, who had 62 yards receiving, was named offensive MVP. Heritage’s Donavon Cunningham was the overall MVP. He rushed for 40 yards and he forced and recovered a fumble at linebacker.
Baseball: Shull Turns Pro
Central Valley pitcher Trevor Shull became the third Spokane-area player to turn pro this summer.
Shull signed with the Tampa Bay Rays and is headed to the Appalachian League to play for Rays' rookie team. Shull is 6-foot-4, 180-pound pitcher.
Shull, CV's No. 2 pitcher behind Gatorade player of the year Rusty Shellhorn, signed to play at Centenary in Louisiana.
The Rays took him in the 19th round (593rd) and he was a draft-and-follow prospect. Shull said he was surprised by the signing bonus.
"I kind of figured that what would happen was I would progress somewhat, they'd give me an offer, but I'd probably be better off in college," Shull told the Spokesman-Review. "Their approach was totally different. They said they liked the movement on my fastball, liked my breaking pitch and apparently told my parents (Todd and Shea) they liked the way I was coachable."
Also turning pro out of Spokane is West Valley's Bryan Peterson and Mount Spokane's Jarek Cunningham.
