After a few crazy days it was time to get down the football business today. We visited with the #1 ranked Don Bosco Ironmen. Bosco is undefeated headed into this Saturday's game against Bergen Catholic and although playoffs are right around the corner, these boys could care less this week. Around these parts of New Jersey, the high schools are almost walking distance apart and the battle for local bragging rights is played out on the field.
Bosco features a suffocating defense that has given up an absurd 16 points in the last 6 games and their offense is led by Louisville bound QB, Matt Simms. Matt is the son of the New York Giant great Phil Simms and has clearly learned a thing or two about big games and moving towards the post season. When asked about their #1 ranking and all the attention that comes with people in the spotlight, Matt responded, "If we don't win a state championship, the rankings won't mean anything." As we found with all of the Bosco players, they are clearly focused and not about to fall victim to the talk or publicity that they are receiving.
Tomorrow it will be time to check out Bergen Catholic and get an inside look into their program that has brought home 16 state championships and sent multitudes to D-1 schools and a handful to the NFL. After a rough start they are 5-2 and on a roll. If they are able to upend the mighty Ironmen this weekend, it will no doubt be an upset, but also will put them in great position as they head into the postseason.
