Smith Center (10-1) and Plainville (8-3) face off this Friday to determine whose season will come to a close. Smith Center has been tearing up the end zone with big points in its last five contests.
Smith Center can now show off nine landslide victories after its most recent game. It picked up a decisive 'W' against Elkhart last week, finishing up at 64 - 7. One of the main ringleaders for Smith Center was senior Jesse Staples, who rushed for 259 yards and four touchdowns. The longest score for Staples was a punishing, defense-defying 60-yard dash in the first quarter. Staples has now scored at least one TD in the past eight consecutive games. Junior Hesston Maxwell banked an additional two TDs for the team.
Meanwhile, Plainville didn't have too many spare points last week in its contest with Ell-Saline, but it still walked away with a 27 - 20 win. One major factor in the victory was the play of sophomore Jordan Finnesy, who earned two touchdowns and 141 yards rushing the ball. Finnesy should be a familiar name as he has been a major contributor for Plainville in the past seven games.
The last time they met, Plainville won 14 - 0. This defeat knocked Smith Center out of the playoffs, so expect it to come at Plainville with a vengeful fire.
