The state of Alabama is losing a high school basketball coaching legend as Jack Doss of Jemison (Huntsville)
announced his retirement Monday.
Doss led four different schools – Jemison, now-defunct Butler (Huntsville), J.O. Johnson (Huntsville)
and Hayes (Birmingham)
– to a total of 10 state titles.
The 2016-17 Jemison team went 34-4 en route to another Alabama crown. Doss won his 800th game in January against Huntsville rival Lee and went on to finish with an overall career record of 812-329.
Doss' star pupils include Trevor Lacey and John Petty
, a Top 50 prospect who will be a freshman at Alabama next season.
Petty was a fifth team MaxPreps All-American in 2016-17, averaging 21.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, 5.6 assists per game for the state champs.
