Both Cooper and Eastlake have made it this far into the playoffs, but they square off this Friday at 6:00 PM to determine who is worthy to move on. Both teams enjoyed a wide margin in their previous games.
You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was exactly Cooper's strategy in dealing with Plainview last week. Everything went Cooper's way against Plainview as it secured a 63 - 14 victory. Senior Tyrees Whitfield deserves a lot of the credit as he ran for 140 yards and also punched in two touchdowns. The longest touchdown for Whitfield was a punishing, defense-defying 76-yard dash in the third quarter. This sound performance was nothing new for Whitfield, who has been a rock for Cooper in the past 11 games. Senior Myller Royals banked an additional two TDs for the team.
Meanwhile, Eastlake can now show off eight landslide victories after its most recent game. It put the hurt on Jefferson last week with a conclusive 56 - 13 victory. Eastlake had two big standouts, as senior Ezekiel Jones rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns, while freshman Anthony Donacio earned two touchdowns and 98 yards rushing the ball. Jones has now scored at least one TD in the past nine consecutive games.
Their wins bumped Cooper to 8-3-0 and Eastlake to 9-2. Cooper and Eastlake have piled up the yardage in their recent games, so expect an explosive offensive competition when the two teams meet up this week.
