GULFPORT, Miss. -
Gulfport (Miss.) took an early lead against
St. Martin (Ocean Springs, Miss.) and held on for a 35-21 victory on Saturday.
The Admirals put up 14 points in the opening frame. Gulfport scored on a touchdown catch by
Richaud Floyd and a
Thad Miller touchdown pass to Floyd.
After taking the lead on a Miller touchdown pass to Floyd in the first quarter, GHS was up 21-7 at the half.
The Admirals saw their 14-point halftime lead fall to 13 entering the fourth.
The Yellowjackets came in giving up 17.6 points per game this season. St. Martin had a hard time against Gulfport's offense, which entered the game scoring 26.0 points per game.
When the two teams played each other last season, GHS came away with a 56-14 victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for St. Martin, which notched a 45-6 victory over St. Helena Central in its previous outing. The win brought Gulfport's winning streak to three games.
Gulfport (4-1) will play a 6A Region 4 game against Harrison Central next week, while St. Martin (4-2) will take on Hancock also in a 6A Region 4 game.
