Video: Scariest in the open field
Two of the five are scheduled to play for Georgia in 2018. Movies, television and the entertainment world seems obsessed more than ever with terror. Fright. Horror.
The same too could be said about the football field. With the speed and athleticism of today's athletes, facing players in the open field is a scary proposition.
With that in mind, here are five of the most terrifying high school players to face in the open field. We're not going to describe them here. We'll simply introduce and let the video tell the chilling tale.
For those faint of heart, please turn away.
5. Ricky Slade, Hylton (Woodbridge, Va.)The 5-foot-9, 195-pound all-purpose back is ranked the No. 1 player in Virginia for a reason. With his ultra-quick feet and moves, he might help Penn State fans mourn less the loss of Saquon Barkley to the NFL.
4. Jalen Preston, Manvel (Texas)The 6-2, 212-pound receiver is ranked the 22nd best player in Texas and No. 10 receiver in the country, according to 247Sports. The Texas A&M commit is doing it all for 7-0 Manvel with 19 catches for 340 yards and three touchdowns and 20 carries for 204 yards and four more scores. He's also the team's No. 1 kick returner with a 30.7 average, including a 99-yarder for a touchdown.
3. James Cook, Central (Miami, Fla.)The 6-foot, 181-pound speed merchant is the younger brother of Minnesota Vikings rookie Dalvin Cook. The nation's No. 6 ranked running back had done it all for the 15th-ranked Rockets. Not only is Cook a blur in the backfield, but he also returns kicks and punts and last week he returned two interceptions for touchdowns, of 95 and 21 yards in a 26-13 comeback win over Carol City. He's committed to Georgia.
2. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)Ranked the second-best receiver in the country for the nation's No. 1 team, St. Brown is most fun to watch returning punts. The 6-foot, 191-pound uncommitted standout turns heads and drops jaws with his dazzling runs in the open field. In six games, he has 36 catches for 636 yards and 12 touchdowns. He's returned two of eight punt returns this season for touchdowns and averages 26.1 per return.
1. Zamir White, Scotland (Laurinburg, N.C.)The top-ranked running back in the country and No. 1 player out of North Carolina, White is a human highlight reel. In nine games, the 6-1, 220-pounder has piled up 1,539 rushing yards in just 110 carries (14.0 per carry) and 25 touchdowns. He also averages 34.8 yards per his eight catches with two more scores. White is also a nifty returner. Like Cook, he's headed to Georgia.
