All eyes will be on the Sunflower State on Friday as Wichita East and Dodge City will receive national recognition as their battle between ranked teams will be televised on ESPNU.
Wichita East will put Arthur and Bryce Brown on display. Arthur Brown is considered one of the top players regardless of position nationally, while Bryce is one of the top junior running backs in the country. Bryce Brown scored six touchdowns in his season debut, a 46-2 victory over Wichita North.
Despite featuring two of the top players in the country, Dodge City's aerial arsenal should give East plenty of fits. Led by Arkansas commit Kale Pick, the Demons demolished Wichita South 47-13 in their season opener. Pick threw for 253 yards in the victory. Pick has two go-to targets in Mykael Thompson, who calmly grabbed three touchdowns in the season opener, and Cimarron transfer Brayton Meier. Meier led Dodge City with 127 yards receiving against Wichita South.
Dodge City defensive end Tanner Turley will be handed the difficult task of attempting to slow down Bryce Brown. Turley is widely considered one of the top defensive players in the state of Kansas.
Shootout in Garden City
Derby's Jake Snodgrass was not outdone in Week 1 by Olathe South's Mike Keese and Dodge City's Kale Pick. Not by a long shot.
Snodgrass blistered Garden City for 480 yards passing in a 35-28 loss. Snodgrass completed 33 of 55 passing for three touchdowns in a losing effort. Snodgrass also added a team high 50 yards rushing for the Panthers. Three Derby receivers had over 100 yards in the contest.
Garden City's Brodrick Smith rushed for 209 yards and three touchdowns, while adding a 97-yard kickoff return on the opening kickoff for a score for Garden City. Smith's 6-yard touchdown run with 6:33 remaining in the fourth quarter gave Garden City the victory.
Salina South Coach Reaches Milestone
Salina South head coach Ken Stonebreaker won his 100th career game as South defeated Winfield, 42-0. Tanner Vinson had 217 total yards and three touchdowns in the victory for the Cougars. This will be Stonebreaker's final season in charge of the Salina South program, as he will step down after the season to concentrate fully on his Athletic Director duties.
