Connor Butkiewicz was a backup quarterback as a sophomore and played in only part of the games at Southington, Conn.
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior got his first varsity start Thursday night and may have a hard time figuring out an encore. All he did was tie the school record and miss the state record by one as he fired seven touchdown passes during a 47-27 victory over West Hartford Hall.
He completed 26-of-35 passes for 476 yards, with Tyler Dube snaring 10 for 239 yards and three touchdowns. The line protected so well that Butkiewicz was not sacked.
“I think that game is an excellent building block,” coach Bill Mella told MaxPreps. “I don’t expect seven touchdown passes every game, but I can dream about it. His poise and knowledge are what I’m excited about. He’s John Wayne, man.
“The line did a great job (no sacks). Everything came together. We are rooted in the spread (offense), but we are very progressive and there is some college feel to it, too. I’ve got some great kids and an awesome staff.”
