The spring sports season has yet to begin in Ohio, but there is already significant football discussion in the Buckeye State.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reported last week that four Ohio teams – St. Xavier (Cincinnati)
, Hilliard Davidson
, Pickerington Central
– have committed to the annual Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic Labor Day weekend in Columbus.
The games will be played Sept. 4 and Sept. 5 at Ohio Stadium. The games will be nationally televised on a cable network with the schedule yet to be determined.
Other teams that have committed include Indianapolis Cathedral
and Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.)
Hilliard Davison was a Division I state semifinalist last season after it defeated Pickerington Central 13-6 in the regional final. St. Xavier was a Division I regional runner-up to Huber Heights Wayne. Centerville lost to Wayne in the regional semifinals.
The Herbstreit event has received national attention the past few years for its high-profile matchups in Columbus and in Texas. In 2010, there were four games in Ohio and four in Texas during Labor Day weekend.
Westerville South, Canton McKinley, Cleveland Glenville and Pickerington Central all won their games in the event. The full schedule is expected to be released later this year.
