The Bothell Cougars took their revenge rather easily.
Bothell (12-0), which finished the regular season as the state's top-ranked team, rolled over defending Class 4A state champs Oak Harbor 42-14 in the state quarterfinals.
Oak Harbor (11-1) beat Bothell in the state title game last year, 21-14. The win snapped Oak Harbor's 18-game win streak.
Bothell will travel to Spokane to face Ferris (12-0) in the semifinals. Ferris, in the semifinals for the first time since 1988 (and the second time ever), beat Graham-Kapowsin 49-19 as GK was missing top running back Marcel Smith to an ankle injury.
In the other Class 3A semifinals, another Spokane school, Lewis & Clark (9-2) - in the semis for the first time since 1978 - will face Edmonds-Woodway (12-0). LC advanced thanks to 260 yards on 29 carries by Alex Shaw.
In the Class 3A semis, there's a matchup of two of the state's top football programs. Bellevue (11-1), which has won five of the last six state titles, faces perennial power O'Dea (12-0). Bellevue racked up 386 rushing yards in a 37-10 win over Southridge of Kennewick. Johri Ferguson rushed for 200 yards and four TDs on eight carries as the Fighting Irish dispatched Meadowdale 42-7.
In the other semifinal, Skyline (12-0), who won the Class 4A title two years ago before dropping down a classification, takes on Franklin Pierce (12-0). Skyline crushed Kennewick 35-7; FP handed Ferndale its only loss 35-28.
There's a showdown in one Class 2A semifinal. State power Prosser (12-0), which lost in the semis last year, will face defending champ Lynden (10-2). Othello (9-3) takes on Burlington-Edison (11-1) in the opposite semi.
In the Class 1A semifinals, two teams from the same league look to advance to the title game. Royal (11-1) takes on Cascade Christina (12-0), while Connell (12-0) faces Montesano (10-2). Connell handed Royal its only loss, hitting a late field goal to win the SCAC game.
In the Class 1B semis, DeSales (12-0), a perennial small-school power, faces Life Christian (11-2). Asotin (10-2) and Toutle Lake(10-2) face off in the other.
And in the Class 2B (eight-man) bracket, Tri-Cities Prep (9-3) and Odessa (11-0) battle, as do Almira/Coulee-Hartline (11-1) and Lummi (11-1).
Football: Evergreen QB Will be a Husky
Evergreen quarterback Luther Leonard was in class when his coach called.
He had a message: The Washington Huskies want you.
"I was in my anatomy class when coach Tarantola called," Leonard told the Seattle Times. "He doesn't call me in class unless it's important, so I picked up. When he told me, I jumped out of mychair and started screaming."
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound signal caller at the White Center school grew up a Husky fan. He verbally accepted UW's offer on Wednesday.
Leonard, who led the Wolverines to their second straight state berth, passed for 1,709 yards and 20 touchdowns against just five interceptions.
Soccer: Eastlake Perfect; Issaquah Repeats
The Eastlake Wolves of Sammamish wrapped up a perfect season with a shootout win in the championship game of the Class 4A state tournament.
Emma Levy tied the game in the 51st minute for the Wolves (19-0); it was the first time they had trailed all season.
Eastlake outscored the Beamer Titans (20-2) of Federal Way 3-1 in the shootout.
"That's pure joy to me, right there," Eastlake coach Chuck Krieble told the Seattle Times while watching his girls celebrate.
Issaquah (19-0-1) repeated as Class 3A champs as Kate Deines, a University of Washington recruit, scored the only goal in the 71st minute in a win over Seattle Prep (17-3-3).
"It's kind of a cherry on top," Deines told the Times. "I couldn't have asked for a better way to end this season."
Seattle Prep was runner-up for the second straight season.
Fife (19-1) won its first state soccer title with a 2-1 win over Burlington-Edison (19-4), the team that eliminated them from the first round of last year's Class 2A state tourney.
Meridian (19-7) outscored LaSalle (19-2) in a shootout, 4-2 to win the small-school title.
Northwest Christian (14-7-2), from north of Spokane, beat Shoreline Christian (14-8-1) 3-0 for the small-school boys title, the only boys soccer contest in the fall. It's NWC's first state soccer championship.
Girls Basketball: Amid Chaos, Roosevelt Hires Coach
Gregg Kalina was a highly successful assistant boys basketball coach at O'Dea. In 13 years, he lost only eight junior varsity games. He's part of the staff that won four Class 3A state titles.
He was hired as the interim girls coach at Roosevelt in Seattle. He is a Roosevelt alum. He left O'Dea to pursue other interests.
Kalina replaces Bill Resler, a highly successful and popular coach who was fired three days before practice started for unknown reasons. Resler has maintained that he wasn't told why he was fired.
In nine years, Resler was 187-51, including a state title in 2004, which was filmed in the documentary "Heart of the Game."
Supporters had said they would rally to try to get Resler his job back.
