3A Conference 17 recap September 24, 2013
Swansboro's Deandre Thompkins rumbled for the longest rushing play in 3A Conference 17 this season in his game against Croatan last week. Thompkins' team beat the Cougars as he sprinted for 72 yards on the play and finished with 188 in all.
White Oak moved up to 187 from 218 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Vikings were able to move up by topping Southwest Onslow 14-12.
West Craven's dynamic duo of Alkeim Harley and Kylikke Green proved tough for Conley to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Harley threw for 141 yards and Green had 53 yards receiving. Tyrone Brown helped West Craven's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 41 yards.
The Eagles' dynamic duo of Harley and Green proved to be unstoppable against the Vikings, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Tyrell Johnson was a force in the backfield as West Carteret bested Bertie.
Green was the best receiver in the league this week as West Craven fell to Conley.
Harley put up the best numbers in passing as Matthew Riggsbee's team fell to Brian Paschal's team.
Luke Frantz was a key player and the best on defense this week as Swansboro bested Croatan. The 5-foot-9 junior.
Johnson was the best running back in 3A Conference 17 this week. He ran for 234 yards on 31 carries as the Patriots lost to the Vikings. Devon Godette also contributed to the rushing game with 77 yards on the ground.
Johnson provided a threat through the air and on the ground as West Carteret defeated Bertie.
6-foot-1 quarterback Travis Sabdo of Havelock is the league leader in passing yards this season with 755. He has also thrown 8 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Markuise Hemby. The Swansboro star has 11 catches for 258 yards.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Tim Laspada's team takes on Jacksonville. At the moment, the Pirates are in third, while the Cardinals are in fourth.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, the Rams beat Northside 40-15,. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.
