BAKER CITY, Ore. – The players may come from Oregon’s four smallest classifications, but their efforts have helped produce some pretty big numbers during the 56-year history of the Oregon East-West All-Star Football Game.
- $2.5 million raised for the Shrine Hospitals for Children
- $71,000 raised in 2007 alone
“The Greatest Little Shrine Game in the World” will be held Aug. 2 in Baker City and televised in five states by Fox Sports Northwest for the fourth year in a row. The game is recognized nationally as the top fundraiser for the Shrine Hospitals for Children.
The tradition began in 1952 and was held in Pendleton for the first 20 years. It moved to La Grande in 1970 and finally to its current home – Baker City – in 1973.
The East will be coached by Bob Macauley of Sisters with Kevin Swift (Gold Beach), Lane Stratton (Lakeview) and North Powder’s Skye Flanagan serving as assistants.
Co-head coaches Jon Wolf of Gladstone and Rob Umbenhower of Dayton will led the West with Dallas Amer (Oakland) and Laric Cook (Mohawk) assisting.
Each team will feature 30 players selected by a coaches’ ballot. The East leads the all-time series 30-22-3.
