Look out world, Kaelin Ammons is on a tear.
ÿ
Ammons, the senior quarterback for the Franklin County Flyers and a Mr. Football Kentucky candidate, has surpassed the 1,000-yard passing mark for the season and passed the 10,000-yard mark for his career in week two.
ÿ
Ammons has thrown for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns in just three games this season, and has rushed for 304 more yards and eight more scores.
ÿ
Yet Ammons isn't capturing the attention of the top-tier Division I-A programs. Ammons's size - he stands in at 5-11 _ according to family members - is what's scaring coaches away.
ÿ
The University of Kentucky was in the house to watch Ammons and his Flyers play against crosstown rival Frankfort last Friday, a game where he threw for 440 yards in a 40-20 victory.
ÿ
While Ammons is listed at over 6-0 by some media outlets, he isn't, and most coaches feel a quarterback that size is a major gamble when it comes to handing out a scholarship.
ÿ
But Ammons' talent makes up for his lack of size without a question and he has proved that throughout his career at Franklin County. Still, teams don't want to take a risk with a supposedly undersized quarterback.
ÿ
Kentucky has been heavily recruiting Ammons for the past couple of months, but the Wildcats want him to play in the defensive secondary. Rich Brooks' defense needs all the help it can get, but Ammons shouldn't have to play his part-time position in college.
ÿ
Ammons is a threat on both sides of the football, but quarterback is where Ammons belongs. He's proven that time and time again, but the knock is still there.
ÿ
Ammons can pick a part a defensive secondary like few other signal callers playing the position anywhere in the country. Just when a play appears to be doomed, Ammons makes something happen with either a precision pass downfield, or an impossible scramble to pick up yardage.
ÿ
The old adage "size isn't everything" obviously doesn't apply to Ammons. When it comes to the way he is seen by college coaches, it seems to be the only thing.
