Laquanda Younger scored her 1,000th point in
just her 50th game last week in a loss against Hampton.
"She
could have reached 1,000 last year, but the thing about Q is her
unselfishness," Raiders coach Vanessa Starks told The Daily Press.
Younger,
who according to her coach has received scholarship offers from
Delaware, Georgetown, Maryland, Norfolk State and VCU, scored a
career-high 37 points in the loss and is averaging 20.3 points per game
in her career. Younger is chasing a seemingly insurmountable state scoring record of 3,290 points set by Phoebus' La'Keshia Frett in 1993.
* I did play-by-play Tuesday night for the Concord-Newark game and saw
Concord's
Solly Stansbury play for the first time. The 6-foot-6 lanky
sophomore showed a deft touch from beyond the 3-point arc, in the paint
and at the foul line. He showed toughness as well, snaring 11 rebounds
on his way to being named player of the game.
Perhaps most
importantly, he has what most great players do – athletic genes. Solly
is the son of former NBA star Terrence Stansbury (who starred at Newark
High and was in attendance at the game) and brother of WNBA player
Tiffany Stansbury. Concord coach Ralph Flowers told me Stansbury has
Division I potential as he "grows into his body."
