On the schedule
Want to catch a game this week? Here are a few that are worth the drive:
Thursday:
Few teams have been more impressive this season than Chatfield. The Chargers romped in their opener against 4A stalwart Dakota Ridge before outlasting Ponderosa in Week 2. This week, highly regarded Bear Creek comes calling in a matchup that pits two of the state's top quarterback in the spotlight.
Chatfield's Sam Stratton has been one of the state's best players during the first two weeks, while Zach Thenell will fill the air with footballs in this Class 5A Big 8 League showdown. Another top 5A matchup: Fort Collins at Boulder in a clash of 2-0 teams.
The schedulers didn't do Broomfield any favors. A week after meeting top-ranked Greeley West (a 28-6 loss), the Eagles play host to 2008 quarterfinalist Longmont, which is 2-0. Broomfield needs a win to avoid falling too far back in the Class 4A Northern League standings.
Friday:
The small schools move to the forefront this day, with a host of top contests. Fourth-ranked Burlington, fresh off a win against rival Wray last week, travels to Akron to meet the three-time defending Class A state champions.
Hayden at Grand Valley, both 2-0, is another one that should hold interest in the classification.
In the 2A ranks, No. 4 Platte Valley looks to have regained its championship form, and will find out for sure when it travels to Arvada to take on Faith Christian. Don't miss this clash of titans. Also, Class 3A has two games featuring four unbeaten teams in Pueblo Central at Falcon and Conifer at Valor Christian. The 6-Man ranks have a potential championship preview when top-ranked and defending champion Hi-Plains heads to No. 5 Eads.
Saturday:
Pueblo West (4A) at Pueblo County (3A) might be a cross-classification game, but that doesn't take the luster off of this one in the Steel City. Another small-school game to note, undefeated Merino at Stratton (2-0) in Class A 8-Man.
