The scoreboard read: Home 00, Visitors 02.
But this wasn’t a defensive struggle decided by a safety. In a score that would be difficult to achieve on the hardwood, Throckmorton and May got together in a six-man battle that nearly lasted into Saturday morning.
When the dust settled, May missed a two-point kick to suffer a cruel 102-100 loss to Throckmorton in five overtimes. In six-man football, kicked extra points are worth two points. Had May split the uprights with a potential game-tying boot, the two teams might still be playing.
According to Sixmanfootball.com, the game was believed to be the highest scoring six-man game in Texas history.
The two teams combined for 55 first downs and 1,091 yards of total offense.
After regulation, the score was tied at 66. Michael Everett scored with four seconds remaining after his team drove nearly the length of the field in 43 seconds with no time outs remaining.
Throckmorton quarterback Brady Hogue threw for eight touchdowns in the victory. May’s Nathan Howard threw for 351 yards and added 151 more on the ground in a losing effort.
Strangely enough, the third highest scoring game in history also occurred on Friday when Fort Elliott defeated Miami 106-86 in a game that ended in regulation.
Fort Elliott’s Colbey Hanson rushed for 399 yards and 10 touchdowns, threw for four touchdowns, and added an interception return for a touchdown for good measure.
Liberty Hill Outguns Pachall, Brownwood
Liberty Hill, the leader in consecutive victories with 28, survived a huge test from pass-happy Brownwood. The Panthers shoved it down Brownwood’s throat, rushing for 513 yards at a clip of 8.3 yards per carry in a 56-49 victory.
Ryan Fickel rolled to a team-high 169 yards, Dusty Turner added 168 yards on just six carries, while Dusty Boyd chipped in with 128 yards. Fickel and Boyd both rushed for two touchdowns.
True to form in its dominant run through 3A football, Liberty Hill took to the air on two occasions, completing both for 73 yards.
Casey Pachall proved his Division I credentials in a losing effort for Brownwood. The TCU verbal completed 24 of 33 through the air for 482 yards and six touchdowns in the near-miss. Parker Taylor latched onto 11 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns.
All-State candidate Cody Lattimore scored the only points in the first quarter with a 28-yard interception return for a score.
Pachall threw for four touchdowns in the second half and added a 41-yard touchdown run as the underdogs attempted a furious comeback.
Three of Liberty Hill’s four victories have come by a combined 12 points.
Muleshoe Brings the Wood in Victory over Crane
Wes Wood continued his blistering aerial display as Muleshoe knocked off 2A No. 2 Crane, 63-41.
Wood threw for 390 yards and totaled seven touchdowns to lead his team to a huge victory to move to 4-0 on the campaign. In Muleshoe’s 4-0 start, Wood has thrown for 22 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions, which were returned for Crane touchdowns.
Wood calmly tossed six touchdown passes and added an 11-yard touchdown run. Lane Wood caught nine passes for 127 yards and added 104 rushing yards for the Mules. Victor Vasquez recorded eight receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns.
