Bastrop’s 49-game winning streak finally has ended, with traditional Class 1A state power Shreveport Evangel Christian Academy pulling off the upset of the defending Class 4A state champion, 28-22.
Evangel’s CerDerrick Tyson sealed the deal with a 34-yard touchdown run that completed a six-play, 72-yard drive at 10:37 of the fourth quarter. Tyson also figured into Evangel’s first touchdown with an 80-yard, halfback pass to Eric Thomas in the first quarter.
Evangel took a 14-6 halftime lead on the strength of Dez Duron’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Jennings. Duron finished 28-of-43 for 207 yards and two touchdowns.
“This was an amazing game,” Evangel coach John Bachman said. “These kids played hard. They fought hard.”
Bastrop quickly tied the third-quarter score when quarterback Rueben Randle raced 66 yards to the Evangel 1-yard line and JeVante Watson eventually scored. Randle also ran for the two-point score.
Evangel snapped the deadlock, though, with Duron throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone to Quinn Giles.
Bastrop regained the lead again at 22-21 when Watson took a screen pass from Randle and turned it into a 47-yard touchdown. Randle added another two-point conversion run. Bastrop had an opportunity for more third-quarter points, but Evangel’s Virgil Williams intercepted a Randle pass in the end zone. That set the stage for Evangel’s surprising victory.
“I thought we lost our composure out there a few times,” Bastrop coach Brad Bradshaw said. “There's only one person to blame in the program, and that's me because I’m the one who put every kid out there on that field. Their coaches did a better job than ours did.”
Top-ranked, Unbeaten Acadiana Falls
My, how the mighty have finally fallen, with top-ranked and previously undefeated Acadiana of Scott succumbing to Lake Charles Barbe, 24-20, in Class 5A.
Barbe quarterback Eric Cutrera capped a spectacular performance with a 3-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Ernest Celestie to give Barbe the lead for good. Cutrera earlier threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Josh Edwards and scored on a 2-yard run. Cutrera completed 20-of-23 passes for 344 yards.
Fourth-ranked Barbe improved to 6-0 overall in the District 3-5A opener for both teams. Acadiana, which appeared in last year’s state championship game, lost for the first time in six games.
Acadiana took an early led on Louis Hollier’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Dashami Anders. Barbe bounced back on Raphael Zham’s 28-yard touchdown run and Cutrera’s scoring run. But Acadiana regained a 17-13 advantage on Hollier’s 1-yard touchdown run.
Barbe went back in front on Edwards’ touchdown catch before Acadiana answered with Dvan Alexander’s 1-yard touchdown. Alexander finished with 26 carries for a game-high 121 yards.
Zenon, St. James Drop Isidore Newman
Isidore Newman of New Orleans had been unbeaten until it ran into St. James and the phenomenal Kenny Zenon.
Zenon scored five touchdowns as St. James handed Newman its first loss in six games. Zenon scored on runs of 3, 15, 1 13 and 1 yards in helping St. James to improve to 4-2 overall. It was the District 2-A opener for both teams.
Quarterback Wes Luquette lent his support to Zenon with touchdown passes of 8 and 11 yards to Jeffrey Hampton.
Shreveport Calvary Christian Remains Unbeaten
Shreveport Calvary Christian continued its drive toward perfection with a 63-13 victory over Vivian North Caddo.
James Michael Miller ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns, and quarterback Beaux Gipson threw for 164 yards and three touchdowns, as the Cavaliers improved to 7-0 overall.
Miller scored on runs of 12, 21 and 4 yards in helping Calvary Christian to a 42-7 halftime lead.
Gipson completed 8-of-11 passes, including scoring tosses of 48 and 16 yards to Wes Nale and 1 yard to Colton Derrick. Nale finished with three catches for 97 yards, while Derrick had four receptions for 63 yards.
Calvary also scored on Demario Robinson’s fumble recovery in the end zone, Alson Eaves’ 84-yard return of a fumble and Quovondo Carthen’s 3-yard run.
West Monroe Enjoys Dominating Performance
Not only did West Monroe maintain its supremacy, but the Rebels celebrated homecoming with a 63-14 rout of Shreveport Southwood.
Four running backs scored and four fumbles were recovered, including one returned for a touchdown. West Monroe limited Southwood to 60 yards total offense while amassing 396 of its own.
LaDarius Abrams scored three times, including twice on runs of 15 and 9 yards, respectively. Doncorius Powell reached the end zone on a 26-yard scamper, as the Rebels roared to a 56-8 halftime lead.
Quarterback D.J. Banks added to the onslaught with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Remedies. Barkevious Mingo returned a recovered fumble for a 3-yard touchdown.
and ran into the end zone from 3 yards out to end the first period.
“Being a young team, we made a lot of mistakes,” Southwood coach Ron Bagley said. “Just to even play a normal ballgame, you can't make any mistakes.”
Of his team’s six fumbles, Bagley said, “When you do something like that against a good ball team, you're giving it away.”
Southwood’s only first-half touchdown came on Jontarius Easterling’s 88-yard run. That was no match for West Monroe’s 242 first-half rushing yards. West Monroe amassed 312 first-half yards to just 35 for West Monroe.
For all the first-half explosiveness, the second half featured only two touchdowns. Southwood’s Melvin Johnson scored on an 8-yard run and West Monroe’s Demetri Hampton reached the end zone on a 4-yard run.
Alexandria Holy Savior Menard Runs Wild in Victory
