Two standout basketball players, one more award for each.
O'Dea's Jamelle McMillan and University's Angie Bjorklund were both named Gatorade state players of the year last week.
It was the second-straight award for Spokane's Bjorklund, who was the only player in the state named to the McDonald's All-American team this year. The second team MaxPreps.com All-American will play at Tennessee next year.
McMillan, son of Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, won the award after guiding the Seattle private school to the Class 3A state title, the third title in four years for the Fighting Irish. McMillan will play at Arizona State next year.
Baseball: Decatur Player Hits Four Homers
Brock Gates hit four home runs as Decatur beat Kent-Meridian 24-6 in a South Puget Sound League game. Brock went 5-for-5 and drove in 11 RBI.
In other baseball news: Renton beat Tyee 9-2. Why is that a big deal? The win matched Renton's win total in 2006. The Indians were also winless in 2003, 2004 and 2005. . Logan Bushnell became the first player at Emerald Ridge to hit for the cycle in a 12-10 loss to Bethel.
Track and Field: Two Washingtonians Win at Arcadia
Kentwood's Michael Chinchar won the mile in 4:09.6 seconds at the 40th Arcadia Invitational, considered the top national in-season meet in the country. This year's meet featured an estimated 3,500 athletes.
Elisa Bryant of Inglemoor won the discus at 150 feet, 3 inches.
In other track news: Decatur's Ezra John Griffey showed he's a top sprinter by recording state-best times in the 100 and 200. Griffey ran the 100 in 10.64, the 16th-best time in state history. Two days later he ran the fastest 200 at 21.9.
