The Katy Tigers were all over the Cinco Ranch Cougars today, winning 38-9.
Katy was used a balance attack to dismante Cinco Ranch. Aundre Dean got the scoring started with a long touchdown run. Bo Levi Mitchell had a brilliant game, throwing for four touchdowns. Katy did not punt the ball until there were about two minutes to go in the third quarter. Their offense was unstoppable, and their defense was pretty much impenetrable.
Before the game, I had a chance to speak to Texas high school football authority Chris Doelle, who hosts the Lone Star Gridiron podcast (http://www.lonestargridiron.com/). Chris does a show several times a week on Texas high school football, so he definitely knows his stuff. Before the game, he told me that he picked Katy as his preseason top team in Texas. That said alot, given the talent around the state. So I had high expectatinos come kickoff time. The Tigers certainly didn't disappoint today.
Some other observations from today's game:
- Maybe I haven't been paying attention in previous games, but the marching bands for both schools really stood out to me today.
- I noticed this in Prattville, and saw it again today. When there was an injury time out and a player was down, players on both teams got down on one knee until the player was able to get up and walk off. It was nice to see that type of respect across rivalry lines.
- I got a copy of Katy Nation, which will definitely make for good reading in airports and on planes
- During the moments leading up to a Katy kickoff, the band would play some of the dramatic music to Jaws, one of my favorite movies. Cool stuff.
Off to Tulsa in the morning!~SS
