Junior Brandon Gilbert didn't play his best tennis today at all. Not even near his best. But that's actually why he has been selected as Player of the Match. After a frustrating start, dropping the first set 4-6, Brandon kept his cool and ramped up his intensity to secure the second set 6-1. After a quick start of great shot-making, Brandon took a lead in the tiebreaker, but saw that lead slip away with a few errors and tough luck. Yet again, Brandon stiffened his will, and dug in to collect the final few points for the win. The win secured the overall team win with a 5-1 lead going into doubles. Brandon followed his 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) singles win, with a dominating performance at #1 doubles. Paired with Cameron Beaman, Brandon secured a sold doubles win 8-2.
Brandon Gilbert is a senior, and 4-year starter on the men's varsity team. Considered the best overall athlete on the team (arguably at the entire high school), Brandon is not only a good player, but a team leader - often playing injured this season at the #1 singles position where a strong opponent awaits in virtually every match. However big the other team's bully is, Brandon takes him on - freeing his teammates to handle the lesser talents. So, as a coach, it's nice to see Brandon be able to dish out a little heat today, with a 6-0, 6-0 singles win, followed by an impressive 8-1 doubles win.
Senior Brandon Gilbert finishes a stellar regular-season career today with a #1 6-0, 6-0 singles win and an 8-2 #1 doubles win. Brandon has played #1 or #2 singles and #1 or #2 doubles in every match since he was a freshman. Moreover, as a freshman he joined a roster that was coming off a last place conference finish and a dismal 0-15 record. Brandon spurred an immediate uptick in the program. As he claims Player of the Match honors in the final conference match of his career, Brandon holds a Conference Championship, a 16-1 team record (with 16 straight wins), and holds the #1 seed on the #3-ranked tennis team in the State. Great impact on a day and a program. .
