Ohio High School Football - Anderson winner over Winton Woods
October 18, 2024: Cincinnati, OH 45255 The Anderson Raptors (Cincinnati, OH) football knocked off the visiting Winton Woods Warriors (Cincinnati, OH), 31-17 in Friday's league outing.
The Raptors now sport a 9-0 record. They take the field next when they travel to Loveland for a Eastern Cincinnati outing on Friday, October 25. Anderson will clash with a Tigers squad coming off a 21-17 league loss to West Clermont (Cincinnati, OH). The Tigers record now stands at 3-6.
With the defeat, Winton Woods drops to 8-1 on the campaign. The Warriors host Lebanon (Lebanon, OH) to clash with the Warriors in a Eastern Cincinnati outing on Friday, October 25. The Warriors come into the outing with a record of 6-3. Lebanon won 41-6 in their recent league outing against Walnut Hills (Cincinnati, OH)
First Quarter
Anderson received the ball first to begin the game, but the Raptors could not advance the ball past midfield and turned the ball over on downs to Winton Woods. With eight minutes left to go in the first quarter, Warriors quarterback Bryshawn Brown connected on a 29-yard touchdown pass with sophomore Chris Mathis to put Winton Woods up 7-0. Anderson was able to answer, however, on the ensuing drive when senior quarterback Justice Burnam found Caden Piening from 23 yards out for a Raptor touchdown. Lucas Callahan made the PAT to knot the game at 7 with five minutes remaining in the first. With less than a minute to go in the quarter, Winton Woods' Isaiah Garrett pounded his way into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown to put the Warriors back up by seven at 14-7. Anderson ended the first quarter with possession but trailed by one score entering the second quarter.
Second Quarter
The Warrior defense opened the second quarter strong, forcing a turnover on downs that handed the ball back over to Brown and the offense. Winton Woods put together a lengthy drive that spanned nearly half the quarter but was forced to punt after a third-down stop. With 3:17 remaining in the half, Justice Burnam scampered nine yards for a 9-yard Raptor touchdown and Callahan made the extra point to tie the game at 14 apiece. Anderson's defense then forced another Warriors punt, and Burnam connected with senior wide receiver Trace Jallick to give the Raptors their first lead of the game at 21-14 with 36 seconds to go. Callahan kicked an onside kick that Anderson recovered, but the Raptors were unable to get into scoring position before halftime ended. The game entered halftime with Anderson leading Winton Woods, 21-14.
Third Quarter
Winton Woods opened the second quarter with the ball, but the Anderson defense continued its stand, forcing a punt that set the Raptors up across midfield in Warrior territory. Lucas Callahan was able to nail a 28-yard field goal with 5:10 remaining in the quarter to extend the Raptor lead to two scores at 24-14. A few minutes later, the Warriors tacked on a 19-yard field goal of their own to cut the lead back down to seven at 24-17. An Anderson fumble gave the ball back to Winton Woods on the last play of the third quarter, so the Warriors began the fourth quarter with possession and trailing by seven.
Fourth Quarter
Winton Woods' opening drive of the fourth quarter stalled out and resulted in a punt, and Anderson was able to capitalize on its next possession as Burnam hurled a 79-yard pass to Jallick (their second connection of the game) for a Raptor touchdown with 6:55 left in the game. Callahan added the PAT to extend Anderson's lead to 14 at 31-17. With three minutes remaining, Bryshawn Brown's pass was intercepted by Raptor safety Jayonn Saunders in the back of the end zone. Anderson was able to run out the rest of the clock and emerge from Week 9 with a huge win over Winton Woods.
