Fans at Saturday's non-league challenge between the Dougherty Trojans (Albany, GA) and the host Westside Seminoles (Macon, GA), saw Dougherty's basketball squad hold off Westside by a tally of 76-71.
With the victory, Dougherty improves its record to 1-2 on the campaign. The Trojans host Colquitt County (Norman Park, GA) to play the Packers in a non-league challenge on Tuesday, December 15. The Packers come into the challenge with a record of 0-1.
Next up, the Seminoles play the Baldwin Braves (Milledgeville, GA) in a AAAA Region 4 challenge, on Thursday, December 3. Westside will attempt to improve on its 0-1 season record.
Dougherty defeated Westside 76-71 in overtime on Saturday.
Dougherty Trojans Varsity trailed early, and were losing 29-19 by the half, only to come back with a vengeance in the final two quarters. Scoring a game-high 27 points in the third quarter on the strength of a 9-3 ran, Dougherty had an outstanding late in the game scoring run. With 30 total fouls, Dougherty played a physical game throughout.
With a field goal percentage of 50% (7-for-14), Elijah West had a great game from the field, also sinking 57% (4-for-7) of threes attempted.
Mikel Jones (8 points) and Rabren Pittman (6 points) each contributed multiple three-pointers. Two other players also racked up double digit scores for Dougherty. Jadien Shider added 16 points and Chris Lamar put up 14 points. Also contributing for Dougherty were Kennard Norris (6 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals), Zion Gardner (4 points, 3 rebounds), Bakari Bryant Jr. ( 2 rebounds, 3 steals), and L Clyde (2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal).
Dougherty finished the game with 48 rebounds (23 offensive / 25 defensive), two blocks and 14 steals.
