The crowd at Thursday's non-league test between the Cathedral Phantoms (Los Angeles, CA) and the host Torrey Pines Falcons (San Diego, CA), saw Cathedral's soccer squad get by Torrey Pines by a count of 2-1.
The Phantoms now hold a 23-3 record. They play next when they travel to San Clemente for a non-league test on Saturday, March 2. Cathedral will meet a Tritons squad coming off a 4-0 non-league win over Birmingham (Lake Balboa, CA). The Tritons record now stands at 25-2.
With the loss, Torrey Pines drops to 16-3 on the season.
The Phantoms were tied at halftime with the Falcons of Torrey Pines. The Falcons struck first on a24 yard free kick beating Phantoms GK Adrian Munoz. With 90 seconds left in the match the Phantoms received a thrown in in the Falcons defensive third. On the throw in Johnny Carillo shot but the ball deflected off a Falcon defender and fell in front of Omar Arrieta who put the ball in the back of the net. The match went to a Golden Goal overtime. With thirteen minutes of the fifteen minute overtime completed left back Jaime Gonzalez switched the ball to Alex Lugo who controlled the ball and fired a volley for the match winner.
