Florida High School Basketball - Nease winner over Ponte Vedra
January 6, 2012: Ponte Vedra, FL 32095 In Friday's league outing, the Nease Panthers (Ponte Vedra, FL) basketball squad knocked off the visiting Ponte Vedra Sharks (Ponte Vedra, FL), by a margin of 53-44.
The Panthers (9-4) will now prepare for their outing against Orange Park (Orange Park, FL). The Raiders go into the non-league outing with a 2-11 record.
The Sharks now own a 11-8 record. They take the field next when they host Menendez for a 5A District 4 outing on Tuesday, January 10. Ponte Vedra will clash with a Falcons squad coming off a 75-63 league win over Matanzas (Palm Coast, FL). The Falcons record now stands at 5-8.
First Quarter
A large and enthusiastic crowd was hand Friday night and saw host Nease High School snap Ponte Vedra’s five game winning streak with a 53-44 victory.
The Sharks were trailing by but one point heading into the final quarter but were only able to come up with three points as Nease pulled away in the waning moments.
Nease football star Denzell Hayden equaled his season high by pouring in 24 points for the victors, nine of those points coming from the free throw line.
The Shark’s leading scorer on the season Beau Beech had a rare off night from the floor as the UNF bound star was held to nine points, well below his 26 points per game average.
Ponte Vedra got a big first half spark from senior Richard Westbury who came into the game with only seven points scored in the entire season. Westbury more than equaled that total when he canned a trio of three point shots as the Sharks trailed by only 4 points at halftime 29-25.

Third Quarter
Beech received a big cut to his forehead when he when he crashed into the wall while pursuing a loose ball midway in the third quarter and had to sit out nearly eight minutes of the contest.
Sophomore point guard Jackson Johnson led the Sharks in scoring with 14 points and also came up with a school record six steals in a losing cause.
With the victory Nease has pulled into a tie for the top seed in District 5A play with the Sharks. Ponte Vedra will host Menendez on Tuesday night at the Shark pit in an important district match up.
