Georgia High School Basketball - Dougherty nudges Westover
January 26, 2019: Albany, GA 31705 In Saturday's league outing, the Dougherty Trojans (Albany, GA) basketball squad nipped the visiting Westover Patriots (Albany, GA), by a margin of 70-68.
The Trojans (14-8) will now prepare for their outing against Northside (Columbus, GA). The Patriots go into the AAAA Region 1 outing with a 10-13 record. In their last outing, Northside was tipped by Carver (Columbus, GA), 87-65, in a league outing.
The Patriots now own a 12-9 record. They play next when they host Cairo for a AAAA Region 1 outing on Tuesday, January 29. Westover will clash with a Syrupmakers squad coming off a 101-61 league loss to Carver (Columbus, GA). The Syrupmakers record now stands at 3-18.
First Quarter
Will Riggins scored 17 points to bring Dougherty to a 70-68 victory over Westover on Saturday. On a two-pointer from Riggins, Dougherty Trojans Boys Varsity sealed their victory in the fourth quarter.
Dougherty connected from the field early, claiming a 38-29 lead at the half. Both Dougherty and Westover (Albany, GA) played hard, with 21 and 23 personal fouls, respectively.
Riggins paved the way for Dougherty, making 86% (6-for-7) of shots attempted while also sinking 71% (5-for-7) of free throws attempted.
Rod Jones put up two three-pointers and scored nine points total. Two other players also racked up double digit scores for Dougherty. Eric Gulley put up 13 points and Justin Jackson added 11 points. Also contributing for Dougherty were KJ Johnson (8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block), Deonte Brodges (4 points, 2 rebounds), Lavonta Clyde (4 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal), and Jalan Hunter (3 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal). Jackson was a big defensive contributor as well, racking up 12 rebounds.

Dougherty finished the game with 43 rebounds (20 offensive / 23 defensive), two blocks and 22 steals.
