Softball Recap: Winn Takes a Loss

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Thursday as neither Winn nor McCollum made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Mavericks fell just short of the Cowboys by a score of 2-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cowboys this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 1-0 back in March.

Mayte Figueroa spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on seven hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Winn saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lilian Hurtado, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double. Daisy Garcia also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Winn has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost seven of their last nine contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-13-1 record this season. As for McCollum, they pushed their record up to 18-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Winn is set to square off against their familiar foe Southwest at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, McCollum will face off against rival Southwest Legacy at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
