Baseball Preview: Oakwood Comets vs. Monticello Sages
The Oakwood Comets will head out to face off against the Monticello Sages at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Oakwood barely beat Fisher the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Oakwood was the clear victor by a 12-2 margin over Fisher on Wednesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Comets.
Bryson Marcinko was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Xander Wilson and Weston Frazier did most of the damage at the plate: Wilson scored a run and stole three bases while going 1-for-4, while Frazier scored three runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Wilson also brought in two RBI, marking his first of the season. Chase Harrison was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Oakwood always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Fisher only posted an OBP of .423.
Meanwhile, Monticello gave up the first runs last Tuesday, but they didn't let that get them down. They came out on top against Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond by a score of 5-1.
Monticello's record is now 3-1. As for Oakwood, the win got them back to even at 3-3.
Oakwood couldn't quite get it done against Monticello in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 as they fell 6-2. Can Oakwood avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
