The Bastrop Bears will square off against the University Trojans at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Bastrop is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They claimed a resounding 62-0 victory over Burbank. The Bears might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by 41 points or more this season.
It was another big night for Gary Jefferson Jr., who rushed for 184 yards and four scores on only ten carries, and also caught one TD. His longest rush was for an impressive 69 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Another player making a difference was Weston Nielsen, who threw for 231 yards and four touchdowns on only 18 passes.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Bastrop was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 272 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Burbank only rushed for 108.
Meanwhile, University was able to grind out a solid win over Fort Bend Marshall on Friday, taking the game 35-27.
The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Savoy Nichols and Kaeden Johnson. Nichols had a great game and threw for 141 yards and a pair of TDs. Meanwhile, Johnson was balling out in the loss, rushing for 138 yards and four scores, while also throwing for 140 yards on nine of 17 attempts.
University didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Khylen Estelle and London Smith. Estelle also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with 17. Joaquin Martinez was another major factor on D, making 16 total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Bastrop pushed their record up to 10-1 with the victory, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 38.2 points. As for University, their record now sits at 7-4.
We should be in store for an exciting game as Bastrop and University have no problem gaining yardage. The Bears have been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 461.3 total yards per game. However, it's not like University struggles in that department as they've been averaging 391.9 total yards.
