Baseball Recap: Skutt Catholic Takes Down Ranked Gross Catholic

Skutt Catholic faced Gross Catholic in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The SkyHawks narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Cougars 5-4. The victory was familiar territory for the SkyHawks, who have now won four matches in a row.

Bubba Day tossed a big game, striking out seven batters over six innings while giving up four earned runs off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Skutt Catholic let Luke Van Dyke and Easton Elam run wild. Van Dyke scored a run while going 1-for-2, while Elam scored two runs while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave Van Dyke a new career-high in RBI (two).

Skutt Catholic's win was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 11-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Gross Catholic, their loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 7-3.
