League recap: Fairfax wins, gets boost in standings

Fairfax was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to second in II Section I. The Stampede beat South Mountain 48-0 earlier in the week.

Chavez extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Millennium, 39-10. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Champions.

Chavez's dynamic duo of Arturo Macias and Rodrick Griffin proved tough for the Tigers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Macias threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns and Griffin had 162 yards receiving. Chasyi Bryant helped Chavez's passing attack out by catching five balls for 76 yards.

Abram Chairez made the biggest impact on defense this week as Ironwood lost to Willow Canyon. The 5-foot-11 senior pulled down one interception.

Deryn McGee was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 25 carries, he ran for 238 yards as La Joya Community bested Millennium. Kevin Ford also contributed to the rushing game with 25 yards on the ground.

The Champions' Macias and Jaylyn Shans have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading II Section I in both passing and receiving yards. Macias has thrown for 1318 yards this season, while Shans, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 22 catches for 466 yards. The Eagles' Jett Robertson leads the league in rushing yards with 876.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Kellis takes on Fairfax. As it stands, the Cougars are in seventh, while Kevin Belcher's team is in second.

Gila Ridge and Central played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Gila Ridge eventually emerging with a 20-17 victory. Jordan Klostreich ran for 120 yards and caught one passes for 11 yards in the win.
