Basketball Recap: Jayla Ayler's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Greenbrier over Grovetown

Greenbrier extended their losing streak to six on Saturday, dropping them down to 3-6. They took a 59-44 bruising from the Grovetown Warriors. The Wolfpack were down 43-22 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.

Greenbrier's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jayla Ayler, who posted 18 points and three steals. Ayler is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Emily McMurray, who had 15 points along with six rebounds and three steals.

As for Grovetown, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 5-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.3 points over those games.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Grovetown to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jordan Cavalier, who shot 54% from the field to rack up 17 points in addition to five boards and three steals. The dominant performance also gave Cavalier a new career-high in blocks (two). Another player making a difference was Layla Brinson, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and nine steals.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Greenbrier will challenge Brunswick at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Grovetown, they will venture away from home to challenge Heritage at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. This will be the Warriors' first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
