Late touchdown does it for the Mustangs.
The hype continues with Texas Football, as teams begin division play. One division that is gaining a lot of interest is 13-5A which got shaken up last week as Dekaney beat heavily favored Westfield in their division opener. Meanwhile Klein Forest comes in with a 1-0 record in district after defeating Klein Oak. Both teams came into this game trying to prove who will be the top dog in this year’s district.
On a splendid night in northern Houston, the game got underway with no ample favorite. Although Westfield did come out wanting to prove that the loss against Dekaney had been fluke. The Golden Eagles kicked off the ball to the Westfield Mustang’s to start the game.
On a spectacular display of special team discipline, Josh Jenkins was able to return the kick off for a touchdown sprinting into the end zone with a 107 yard run. Although this would be considered a great start for the Mustang’s this was not the case, as Klein Oak managed to force Westfield to punt several times, they would not score until midway through the second quarter. Meanwhile, the Klein Forest offense picked up right where it left off against Klein Oak in the previous game. Moving the chains downfield they were able to score three times before they received a response from the Mustang’s.
The Eagle’s put points on the board on their first possession with a Jacob Decker field goal from 34 yards out. The Eagle’s scored again several possession’s later with a perfect 28 yard pass from Matt Davis to Travis Gatlin. As the Mustang’s looked to punt the ball away once more, miscue’s between the punter, and the snapper forced them to down the ball on the goal line. Klein Forest capitalized with a 1 yard run by Cody Idlebird giving the Eagle’s a 9 point lead. Until now the Westfield offense had not been able to score. The team would try to score once more before the end of the half. As Westfield took possession, Jacoby Walker proved why he is one of the best running back’s in the city by cruising into the end zone with an 8 yard run.
This game seemed to be destined for a classic shootout, as both team’s offense’s finally began to click. But Westfield’s defense stepped up big time before the half forcing Klein Forest to punt, which Jacoby Walker took advantage of as he found Jacolby Joseph stranded in the end zone, with a10 yard pass for the touchdown. But this was not all, right before the half with only second’s left Hector Diaz split the upright’s with a 30 yard field goal sending the game into the half in favor of Westfield 23-17.
After an exciting first half, both teams entered a deadlock. After three and out’s by both team’s, Klein Forest was able to find the end zone once again with a 5yard Matt Davis run. This would be the only score of the 3rd quarter, as Westfield trailed Klein Forest 23-24. As the final quarter of this game began, Westfield scored on a 26 yard field goal by Hector Diaz, Westfield took the lead. But Matt Davis was having a phenomenal night as he rushed for his 2nd touchdown, slithering his way across the end zone after a spectacular 20 yard run.
As the last minutes of the game ticked off, Klein Forest seemed to have sealed the victory after the touchdown, but the Westfield defense kicked into another gear, forcing a safety; closing the gap by a slim margin with only 1:46 left to go. Westfield looked to score on the final drive of the game. When all of a sudden Jacoby Walker found Jacolby Joseph open between a sea of defender’s, for a 48 yard catch and run touchdown to finish the game.
Final Score: Westfield 35-32 over Klein Forest. Both teams have a division record of 1-1. Westfield will visit Klein, Meanwhile Klein Forest hosts Dekaney.
