Football Game Preview: Southmoreland Scotties vs. Derry Trojans

Southmoreland is preparing for their first conference matchup of the season on Friday. They will take on the Derry Trojans at 7:00 p.m. Southmoreland is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.

If Derry heads into halftime all tied up, they better play a good second half: that's when Southmoreland took over last week. Everything went the Scotties' way against Ringgold on Friday as they made off with a 28-7 win. The result was nothing new for the Scotties, who have now won four matchups by 21 points or more so far this season.

Southmoreland's defense made their presence known, laying out the QB five times. Ringgold's QB won't forget Jackson Mickens anytime soon given he sacked him three times. Mickens got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Derry scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They took a 41-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of Indiana.

Southmoreland will have to contain Max Doherty as he made an impact in Derry's last game. He rushed for 222 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 8.5 yards per carry.

Derry's defeat dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Southmoreland, their victory bumped their record up to 5-0.

Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Southmoreland has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 170.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Derry struggles in that department as they've been averaging 202.2 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.

Southmoreland strolled past Derry in their previous matchup back in September of 2024 by a score of 31-14. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Scotties since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
