Basketball Preview: Far Northeast W Warriors vs. Hinkley Thunderbirds

The Far Northeast W Warriors will head out on the road to square off against the Hinkley Thunderbirds at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with three consecutive losses for Far Northeast W and 32 for the Thunderbirds dating back to last season.

Last Saturday, Far Northeast W had to suffer through a rough 94-24 loss at the hands of the Angels. While losing is never fun, Far Northeast W can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 272nd, while the Angels are ranked 56th).

Meanwhile, Hinkley struggled with three-point shooting accuracy on Friday (the Ravens were 28% better) and sadly the final score reflected it. Hinkley was outmatched by the Ravens at home and fell 51-5. Hinkley was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-2.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Jimena Rivera, who scored two points along with four steals. It was the first time this season that she grabbed two or more steals. Ana Taufa was another key contributor, scoring no points along with six blocks and five rebounds.

Far Northeast W's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 7-12. As for Hinkley, their loss was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-15.

Everything went Far Northeast W's way against the Thunderbirds in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 as the Warriors made off with a 59-39 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Far Northeast W since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
