Basketball Recap: Paitynn Johns' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Battle Mountain over Yerington

Battle Mountain lost against Yerington two weeks ago and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Battle Mountain Longhorns fell just short of the Yerington Lions by a score of 41-39.

Several Longhorns players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Paitynn Johns, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 boards. The dominant performance also gave Johns a new career-high in blocks (three). Another player making a difference was Noel Hill, who posted 16 points and four steals.

Even though they lost, Battle Mountain was working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Yerington only posted four assists.

Leading Yerington to victory were Saydee Whistler and Laney Triplett. Whistler earned 11 points in addition to seven rebounds and five steals, while Triplett put up 22 points along with seven boards and five blocks. Whistler has become a key player for Yerington: the team is 9-1 when she posts at least five steals, but 4-6 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Brianna Valenzuela, who scored two points in addition to five rebounds and three steals.

Battle Mountain's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-5. As for Yerington, the victory was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-7.

Battle Mountain has already played their next match (against West Wendover), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Yerington has also has no score uploaded for their next game, this one against Pershing County.
