Baseball Recap: Wayne Memorial Comes Up Short

Wayne Memorial had lost seven straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped down to 2-5 to make it eight. They fell just short of the Dearborn Pioneers by a score of 7-6. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Alejandro Quinones put in work while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. What's more, he gave up only two walks, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2025. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and one run.

In other batting news, Braylon Wright made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Wayne Memorial's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 0-4 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Noah O'Neil, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run.

Dearborn's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since April 17, 2025.

On Dearborn's side, they let Yaseen Khalil and Derek Mincey run wild. Khalil went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Mincey got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. Those two runs gave Mincey a new career-high. Bilal Berry also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

While Wayne Memorial had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
