Baseball Game Preview: Fillmore Flashes vs. Carpinteria Warriors

Fillmore is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Wednesday. They will host the Carpinteria Warriors at 3:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

On Saturday, everything went Fillmore's way against Ojai Valley as Fillmore made off with a 14-2 win. While fans of the Flashes might be used to big wins, the 12-run margin marked the team's biggest one yet.

Santiago Avila made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the first time he hasn't allowed a single hit since back in February of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances. He has become a key player for Fillmore: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 0-4 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Javi Contreras, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. He is becoming a predictor of Fillmore's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 0-4 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Johan Reyes, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Fillmore was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .457. The last time their batting average was this high was back in February of 2024.

Meanwhile, Carpinteria never let their opponents score on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 9-0 margin over Coastal Christian. The Warriors' victory was nothing new given the team hasn't lost yet this season.

Carpinteria's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-0. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Fillmore, their victory bumped their record up to 3-4.

Fillmore skirted past Carpinteria 5-4 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Does Fillmore have another victory up their sleeve, or will Carpinteria turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
