Softball Recap: Holston Cavaliers vs. George Wythe Maroons

Holston extended their losing streak to 11 on Wednesday, dropping them down to 1-12. They came up short against the George Wythe Maroons, falling 10-4. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Maroons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 16-12 two weeks ago.

Haleigh Dutton put in work no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits. Dutton was also big at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and one double.

Dutton wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Amber Rolen, who went 3-for-4 with one run. Laken Taylor also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

As for George Wythe, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 14-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games.

Like Holston, George Wythe also got a great game from a two-way player: Morgan Layne. She struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). Layne has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.

In other batting news, Madalyn Morris and Madison Hatcher did most of the damage at the plate: Morris went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs, while Hatcher went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most RBI Hatcher has posted over her last 11 games. Another player making a difference was Avery Cline, who went 1-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Holston will face off against Marion at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for George Wythe, they will square off against Auburn at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
