Watauga had won eight straight at home dating back to last season, but on Saturday they bumped up to 1-1 to make it nine. They walked away with a 53-46 victory over the Avery County Vikings. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Pioneers also won the last time the pair played back in December of 2024.

Watauga's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Josie Mayo, who dropped a double-double with 15 points and ten boards. Another player making a difference was Mia Mitchell, who shot 63% from the field en route to 12 points and seven rebounds.

Watauga was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Avery County only posted four.

Having lost for the first time this season, Avery County fell to 4-1. The matchup marked their lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Despite the loss, Avery County still got an impressive performance from Marley Jones, who went 6-for-14 on her way to 20 points and six boards. Jones is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last seven games she's played dating back to last season. Caroline Hollifield was another key player, dropping a double-double with 11 points and ten steals.

Watauga wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 50-48 loss against Mountain Heritage on the 25th. Avery County has also already played their next contest (against Ashe County), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
