Colleen Schmidt gets fourth place finish.
After an outstanding cross country season, Holy
Trinity’s Colleen Schmidt took to the track at Madison Square
Garden and finished
fourth in the girls’ mile at the 103rd Millrose Games. Schmidt qualified
for this race by finishing in second place, with a time of 4:56.99 (a Holy
Trinity HS record), at the New Balance games.
Holy Trinity coach Jim Muller was proud of Schmidt.
“Colleen's performance once again proved what a fierce and
focused competitor she is,” Muller said. “With two laps left, she looked like
she was fading. Colleen dug down and surged for the final lap and a half,
demonstrating her toughness and determination.”
Schmidt showed why she is one of the top female
milers on Long Island. For the majority of the
race, Colleen stayed among the top runners, before falling back to the rest of
the pack. She was in sixth place with two laps to go, and appeared to be
fading. However, she worked her way up to fifth place with about 50 meters to
go, and then raced past Roslyn’s Emily Lipari at the wire to finish in fourth.
Coach Justin Renna continues to be
impressed with Schmidt. “Colleen Schmidt keeps
amazing everyone,” Renna said. “Her night at Millrose ended a little short, but
she set the stage for a remarkable run at the title, next year. I look forward
to Colleen winning her first indoor league title, and the CHSAA state title,
this season.”
