Football Recap: Mission Bay Gets the Win

Mission Bay had lost three games on the road, but after bumping their record up to 9-4-1 on Saturday that streak is in the rearview. They won a matchup that couldn't have been any closer, slipping by the Escondido Cougars 13-12. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Buccaneers' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 108th, while the Cougars are ranked 295th).

Mission Bay's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Mia Siqueiros, who threw for 204 yards and a pair of TDs. Naomi Le helped Siqueiros out on the ground, picking up 73 receiving yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 45 yards.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Mission Bay's defense and their three sacks. In fact, those sacks all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Kiyoka Burke.

As for Escondido, they dropped their record down to 1-6 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home. Those home losses can't be blamed on the team's defensive effort, having only surrendered 11.0 points on average over those games.

Despite the defeat, Escondido had strong showings from Kim Mendez, who picked up 90 receiving yards and a pair of scores, and Abby White, who threw for 170 yards and two TDs while completing 76.9% of her passes. Mendez was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 60 yards.

Mission Bay didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 31-25 loss against Mira Mesa on the 2nd. As for Escondido, they will square off against Sage Creek at 7:00 p.m. on the 8th.
