Del Norte extended their winning streak to four on Tuesday, bumping them up to 6-3. They were the clear victors by a 19-6 margin over the La Veta Redhawks. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won four games by 11 runs or more so far this season.
Landon Velasquez was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits. Velasquez was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Paul Neal, who went 3-for-4 with five stolen bases, four runs, and one triple. Del Norte is 5-1 when Neal posts two or more runs, but 1-2 otherwise. Liam Kreutzer was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Del Norte always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as La Veta only posted an OBP of .360.
As for La Veta, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-7. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games.
On La Veta's side, David Roel and Miguel Rivera stepped up to the plate in a big way. Roel went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Rivera went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Roel has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played.
Looking ahead, Del Norte will host Monte Vista at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Tigers will need to watch out since the Pirates have now posted at least ten runs in their last three contests. As for La Veta, they will challenge Nucla at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
