Softball Game Preview: Petersburg Vikings vs. Oak Glen Golden Bears

The Petersburg Vikings will square off against the Oak Glen Golden Bears at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Petersburg managed to slip by Keyser the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Vikings came up short against the Golden Tornado on May 1st, falling 9-2.

Meanwhile, Oak Glen faced St. Marys in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Golden Bears were the clear victors by an 8-2 margin over the Blue Devils. The result was nothing new for the Golden Bears, who have now won 16 contests by six runs or more so far this season.

Mattie Carney spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on six hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Oak Glen let Addie Smith and Mikalyn Balch run wild. Smith went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run, while Balch got on base in two of her three plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Kayla Wright was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

Oak Glen has been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 27-10 record this season. As for Petersburg, their loss dropped their record down to 13-9.

Petersburg beat Oak Glen 4-1 in their previous matchup back in April of 2017. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Vikings since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
