Softball Recap: Brighton Bengals vs. West Panthers

It was a good run, but Brighton unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Tuesday. They took a 7-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the West Panthers. Brighton was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as West apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played last Monday.

Alison Nikolaus was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits. Nikolaus has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in four consecutive pitching appearances. Nikolaus was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, and an RBI.

In other batting news, Dalila Romero was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now stolen at least one in the last five games she's played. Audrey Fleckenstein was another key contributor, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.

Even though they lost, Brighton didn't let batters stay on the plate for long and finished the game with 11 strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West only tossed six.

On West's side, Janayah Young spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up six Ks.

On the hitting side, Jayda Spight was incredible, going 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and a triple. Another player making a difference was Josephine Gasu, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Brighton's loss dropped their record down to 9-13. As for West, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 8-6 record this season.
